Red River Farm Network: This is the Soil Fertility Minute presented by the Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council. We’re joined by University of Minnesota Extension soil fertility specialist Daniel Kaiser to discuss starter fertilizer.
Dan Kaiser: We do know there are some options, you know, particularly in the valley with growers still having starter on their planter with the infurrow, with phosphorus to, you know, alleviate maybe some need for broadcast in some of the fields.
With starter, a lot of the work we’ve done in the past has been with 10-34-0, and we’ve seen some shifts. Then really the big thing is whether or not we’re getting enough phosphate on with some of these other products being lower concentrations, particularly sugar beets. So we know that three gallons of a liquid can deal with the larger broadcast. Corn, I still think, though, if you have some really low testing fields that you’re gonna need some broadcast in some of those areas.
But for medium to high testing, I think that would be an option, you know, anywhere from three to five gallons of something like 10-34-0 in some of those areas might be able to get us through this year.
