transcript
Linder Farm Network: It’s time for the AFREC Spotlight, the Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council. Joining us, University of Minnesota Extension Manure Nutrient Management Specialist Melissa Wilson with recommendations for fall manure applications.
Melissa Wilson: Well, there’s a couple things that we have people think about. One is do you have a manure management plan put together? Do you know what fields you’re gonna put on? What are your crops that you’re aiming to fertilize so that you can get the right rate? Those are always good things to be thinking about.
Another thing is thinking about getting your equipment ready. If you have a dragline system, are you checking out your hoses? Are you checking out the couplings to make sure everything is ready to go? If you have, you know, solid spreaders, again, are all the hydraulics working? Is everything ship shape and ready?
And three, we also always want people to think about safety as well. There unfortunately have been accidents where people have fallen into manure pits or gotten injured on the job. So having a safety plan and thinking about, like, who do you need to call, who are you gonna contact, what address are you gonna give emergency personnel, those sorts of things on hand so that if there is an accident, you have them ready to go is a great idea because you wanna have, if you have the knowledge already in your head, you’re more likely to be able to recall it in the heat of the moment rather than having to stop and think about what are the next steps.
