Red River Farm Network: This is the Soil Fertility Minute brought to you by the Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council. Our guest is University of Minnesota Extension Northwest Research and Outreach Center specialist doctor Lindsay Pease.

Lindsay Pease: We are seeing margins being really thin and fertilizer prices are high. You definitely wanna be thinking about the efficiency of your nutrient application. What makes sense economically often makes sense from a loss perspective.

Really, this comes down to following those four R’s: rate, timing, placement, and source. And rate is a really important factor in this, and sometimes soil testing can be your best friend when making sure you’re dialing in that rate right away.

Making sure, especially if you have phosphorus that’s testing in that medium soil test category or higher, maybe considering this may be a year to skip phosphorus applications just because you need to trust your soils can supply the phosphorus that you need.

RRFN: AFREC is a farmer led program advancing soil fertility research. Find out more at mnSoilFertility.com.
