Organization: University of Minnesota, Department of Soil, Water and Climate
University of Minnesota launched its nutrient management web page in 2011, and received 45,000 page views in the first two years. AFREC funds this website. In 2014, the page received nearly a quarter-million views, many due to the placement of links on the websites of the state’s commodity organizations.
The goal of this project was to update the web-based offering, by making more research materials and reports available.
The Department of Soil, Water and Climate has developed a web-based nutrient calculator for grass and legume pastures, and revised a popular series of reports called “Understanding Nutrients in Minnesota Soils” for use on the nutrient management website. Revised papers including these topics were published on the site: fertilizer in corn grown on irrigated sands; banding fertilizer in corn; as well as papers on nitrogen and sulfur use. A revised paper on phosphorus will be published in the summer of 2015.
Work continues on material that can be viewed/used on a handheld device such as a phone or iPad. The university continues to develop its nutrient management Facebook page.
