Background Information:

University of Minnesota Extension has published Best Management Practices (BMPs) for nitrogen since the 1990s. These updated recommendations are based on results from research experiment stations to ensure they are technically sound and likely to be adopted by growers.

The U of M has divided the state into five major BMP regions; southeastern, south central, southwestern / west central, northwestern, and coarse textured (sandy) soil in central and northeastern Minnesota. Each region of the state has specific nitrogen BMP recommendations. Please note that not all soils in this region are coarse textured but the agricultural land generally fits into this category.
